The Kahala Hotel -
The Kahala is the
“Diamond of Diamond Head,” a secluded oceanfront hotel
tucked into a wealthy residential neighborhood. This
location, with its private beach, made the hotel (then a
Hilton) the preferred Hawaiian getaway for Hollywood
names of the fifties and sixties. Of course, there's nothing more horrifying than an island resort hotel stuck in its glory days, waiting for the Rat Pack to come back. Fortunately this is not a problem here. This hotel offers a completely up-to-date luxury hotel experience, with high standard of service (attentive bordering on obsessive) and absolutely top-notch facilities, decorated in a blend of Far Eastern and Hawaiian styles (banishing any thought of floral-print island kitsch). The beach is the star here, as far as leisure attractions are concerned. All manner of aquatic sporting equipment is available, though the more sedentary may simply prefer a chair and a towel. If the private beach is not private enough for you, you may rent a private covered cabana, and call upon the “Beach Butlers” for cold towels and cool mist. Anyone who is still not impressed (perhaps those who are accustomed to being misted and handed cold towels by a butler) might try a swim in the hotel's private lagoon, with dolphins for company. The location is excellent — far enough out of the way to feel like a secluded island getaway, yet just ten minutes from Waikiki Beach. The natural surroundings are spectacular, postcard-perfect. Two beachfront suites offer the illusion of a tiny private resort, steps away from the ocean (with the formidable hospitality resources of the main hotel at your service).
