Atlanta Motor Speedway
I enjoy motor racing.  Although I grew up in Michigan where open-wheel racing was popular (I have been to the Indy 500 about 30 times!), I have learned to enjoy NASCAR.  And, one of the best tracks is the Atlanta Motor Speedway.  But, I will have to admit, the best race I have ever seen there was a 200-mile Indy Car race!

Chief Vann House
The Chief Vann House is noted as being the "Showplace of the Cherokee Nation."  It is decorated with beautiful Cherokee hand carvings done in natural hues of blue, red, green, and yellow.  Try and fit this into your plans when visiting North Georgia.  82 Georgia Highway 225 near Chatsworth, 706.695.2598 or VannHouse@alltel.net.

Braselton
Road Atlanta
I love automobile racing, especially road racing and Road Atlanta is one of the best around.
Road Atlanta became a part of the Panoz Motor Sports Group when they purchased the property in 1996, Since that time, Don Panoz has made many improvements at the track. There are many great events during the year that include the Petit Le Mans, AMA superbike races, and some interesting historic car races including the Mitty Challenge. You can also enjoy SCCA racing events and much more. I enjoy spending the entire weekend at the track camping out in the infield. For information about Road Atlanta (including a current schedule of events and ticket information) you can contact the track a 1.800.849.RACE or visit www.roadatlanta.com. The track is a little less than 50 miles east of Atlanta off of I-85. Take I-85 east to Exit 129, go west on GA 53 about 5 miles to the entrance on the left. Road Atlanta, 5300 Winder Highway, Braselton, GA  30517.

Cumberland Island
Forests so quiet that you can hear yourself breathe, sunlight filtered and diffused through overarching trees and vines, sounds of small animals scurrying in the underbrush, the gentle splash of water moving through the salt marsh, the courting bellow of the alligator, blinding light on water and sand as you emerge from the shadows of the live oak forest, a standing row of slave cabin chimneys, fallow gardens, and crumbling walls of mansions from bygone eras. This is Cumberland Island, Georgia's largest and southernmost barrier island and today a national seashore.

Dawsonville

U.S. OPEN STOCK DOG CHAMPIONSHIP & FARM FESTIVAL
This is normally held the first week in October is an event that I look forward to each year. The U.S. Open Stock Dog Championship is one of the largest dog trial events in the nation. At the trials you will enjoy watching the dogs as these trials test the everyday working skills of all breeds of working stock dogs. Each year, judges are brought to the event from the British Isles to officiate and score.
The event is held at Bailey Farm in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, only about an hours drive from Atlanta. The trials normally host over 100 handlers and dogs from throughout the United States, Canada and Great Britain. Handlers come in all ages, genders and backgrounds, with the youngest to date being 12 years old. AIHDA experts will provide demonstrations during the three-day event on training and care questions.

This event also features family events including a petting zoo, pony rides, arts and crafts displays, wool spinners, blacksmiths and other regional crafts. For more information on the U.S. Open Stock Dog Championships, contact the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce at 706-265-6278 or Hubert Bailey at 706-265-2669. www.bordercollies.net/trial.htm

Historic Chattahoohee Commission
The Chattahoochee Trace is an eighteen county region in Alabama and Georgia promoted by the Historic Chattahoochee Commission (HCC). Organized in 1970, the HCC is charged with the responsibility of promoting tourism and historic preservation throughout this river corridor. In 1978 the Georgia General Assembly and the Alabama Legislature passed identical legislation to establish an interstate compact for the operation of the Commission. Final approval of the compact came in October of that year when the same bill cleared the U.S. Congress and President Carter signed it into law. Alabama counties include Barbour, Chambers, Dale, Henry, Houston, Lee, and Russell; Georgia counties include Chattahoochee, Clay, Decatur, Early, Harris, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Seminole, Stewart, and Troup. This area is a mecca for history buffs, campers, hunters, cyclists, and vacationers, endless historic and recreational attractions are here to be explored and enjoyed. Indian mounds, historic buildings, covered bridges and old mills, championship golf courses, lunker-filled lakes, pilgrimages, and festivals abound throughout the resplendent Chattahoochee Trace where the romanticism of the past blends readily with the spirit of the present.
