Washington is a
conservative town, at times bordering on stuffiness, and its
hotels, largely, are no exception, trying hard to present an
air of grown-up dignity. What limited gestures they make in
the direction of coolness usually come off faintly
embarrassing, like that uncle who still says “groovy,” and
calls everyone “man.”
Hotel George is quite the
opposite, and the lobby is so hip it almost seems to be just
visiting from New York or London. This is where the late JFK
Jr. (that unique crossover celebrity, famous both within DC
and without) made his home in the George Suite during his
visits to the capital.
Hotel George's exterior
is a bit flashy, especially for this town, and the lobby is
all glass, steel, and fossilized coral stone. The décor in
the guest rooms is more understated and sometimes a bit
bland, all cream and white, with the hotel's signature image
(a Warhol-esque portrait of Mr. Washington himself) adding a
touch of personality. The service and facilities go above
and beyond the typical boutique, though; all rooms are fully
equipped for business travel, and the hotel staff will
likely know your name by the time you leave.
Of course the young and
the beautiful aren't Hotel George's only visitors. Capitol
Hill is, after all, just a block away, and Bis, the French
bistro, is one of the city's top restaurants, and a popular
meeting place for the stars of the political world. The
meeting rooms are perfect for that “backroom boys” feeling,
or for anyone who has never sat in a Herman Miller chair.
And the billiard room, overlooking E Street, is the perfect
spot to have a cigar after dinner.
Despite the youthful face
of the hotel, its services are more luxury than boutique,
with a twenty-four-hour fitness center, extensive business
services, and daily complimentary shoeshine. The eighth
floor is wired for wireless internet (though the other
floors make do with T1 connections), and the suites are
especially luxurious, with massive marble bathrooms. All
rooms are pet-friendly.
Behind the deadly serious marble exterior of the 1839 Tariff
Building, Washington’s Hotel Monaco brings a dash of style to an otherwise
conservative town. Or maybe the town lends gravity to a slightly flashy
hotel—some of the Kimpton group’s ventures in other cities verge on kitschy
excess.
No
matter, though; this one is an unqualified
success, joining in the resurgence of the
Penn Quarter neighborhood, across from the
MCI Center sports arena and nearby the
National Portrait Gallery, the International
Spy Museum and the infamous (think Lincoln)
Ford Theater.
Interiors
are rich, in bold colors, with little of the
whimsy of the Monaco’s sister hotels—here
busts of the Founding Fathers replace signed
rock star photos. As usual, though, pets
roam free, and goldfish are available as
company for lonely travelers. Tall rooms are
available, with 90-inch king beds, raised
showerheads, and extra-high ceilings,
perhaps thinking of accommodating visiting
basketball players.
Wireless
internet is standard, and conference
facilities are available, but for small
gatherings or top-secret business, the
living rooms in the Robert Mills suites seat
seven, and are presumably easier to sweep
for listening devices, in case you’re
paranoid after having visited the Spy
Museum. The Poste brasserie has become a
local favorite, with a unique open-plan
design that affords diners a view into the
kitchen below, and it’s open late, a major
draw in this early-to-bed town. That said,
the neighborhood is home to a number of
other restaurants, and Chinatown is a short
walk away.

On the whole, Washington's buttoned-up image is well deserved
— among the many areas of life with which Washingtonians are concerned,
style does not always rank highly. And the hotels, like the people, tend to
be dignified, serious, even elegant, but just not very hip. Hotel Rouge,
though, is one place where a Londoner or a New Yorker could feel at home.
Interiors, as the
hotel's name would suggest, are red-on-red, right down
to the treats in the minibar. Perhaps a bit of color
fatigue would set in at the end of a long stay, but we
have all seen so many Hotel Blancs that this small décor
departure is entirely welcome. Another departure is the
sheer size of the room — some boutique hotel rooms are
glorified closets, but not in this town. Not only are
these rooms spacious but the specialty rooms feature
unique sets of amenities: the “Chat” rooms have desktop
computers with high speed internet access, “Chow” rooms
come with kitchenettes and dining tables, and the
“Chill” rooms have 2 flat-screen TVs, Sony Playstation
2s, and chaise lounges, for the ultimate cot>
The hotel bar,
unsurprisingly, is also aiming for the hipster market,
and the crowd is definitely on the funky side — the
neighborhood, near Dupont Circle, is where the
conservative ambassador crowd and the more youthful
townies come together. The décor sets the tone, with
couches and pillows lining lavender walls and white
leather and aluminum barstools, in contrast to the
typical armchairs-and-cigars vibe of Washington's
stuffier bars. Loud music (gasp!) spills out into the
street, and if you look closely you may see men with
loosened ties — obviously a sign of Western civilization
in decline.

Ritz-Carlton
Ironic in Washington D.C., a town full of French Neoclassical
buildings, that the Ritz-Carlton Washington, DC would be a modern
structure in glass and brick, with not a marble step to be found. Still,
it's more traditional than its Georgetown sister — this mid-century
institutional look is more familiar than the red-brick incinerator in
Georgetown — and inside is the old-world luxury one expects from a
Ritz-Carlton, all ornate detail, fine woodwork and antique-style
furnishings.
This place sees more than
its share of genuine VIPs, and it shows in the service, as
attentive and professional as any. Rooms are outfitted in
high style, with goosedown duvets, marble tubs and separate
showers, from the relatively humble deluxe rooms all the way
on up to the Ritz-Carlton and Presidential suites — perhaps
best left for when a foreign government is footing the bill.
There's a fitness center
that's honestly a bit above and beyond what's required: the
complex spans 100,000 square feet, complete with
full-service spa, junior Olympic pool, basketball courts,
weight rooms and its own restaurant. The Grill is undergoing
an extensive renovation at the moment, but the Bar and the
Lobby Lounge are there to pick up the slack — the latter
also the venue for the Ritz-Carlton trademark afternoon tea.
The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown occupies the site of the
historic Georgetown Incinerator, whose 130-foot chimney still rises over the
hotel and the attached luxury condominiums. This might sound less than
appealing, but there is nothing dingy or industrial about the extensively
renovated building, and anyway, it's a building with character, certainly
preferable to the white-columned opulence of some other Ritz-Carlton hotels.
It's in the spirit of so many loft conversions in rehabilitated downtown
areas of many great cities — the people who once wouldn't have dared walk
around the neighborhood at night are now buying million-dollar homes made
from the bricks of disused factories. The location is
excellent, on a quiet side street, but just minutes from the
White House, the Smithsonian, and hundreds of other famous
places. Within walking distance are a number of Georgetown's
fashionable restaurants, nightclubs, and shops, and the Ritz
complex itself holds a 14-screen cineplex. The complex is
also home to one of the world's most recognizable
celebrities — Michael Jordan lives in one of the 28 luxury
residences that share the Ritz site. Rooms are decorated in
red, gold, and green, complementing the brick exterior of
the incinerator building and the greenery alongside the
Potomac River. Some rooms and suites have views of the
river, others the Kennedy Center — all are decorated in the
sleek, refined style one would expect from a Ritz-Carlton.
High-speed internet, powered laptop safes, and the services
of the Technology butler all cater to the wired traveler,
and the conference and business facilities are very
extensive (naturally, given the expected clientele, of
dignitaries and celebrities).
There is, of course, a signature restaurant, called Fahrenheit (it's located
on the top floor of what was the incinerator building), but the real story
is Degrees, the bar, which is packed to the rafters on Friday and Saturday
night with late-twenties and early-thirties Beltway political groupies. In
some sense, what the Chateau Marmont is to actors, rockers, and models, the
Georgetown Ritz-Carlton is to the Washington elite. For additional information, or to make a reservation,
