Alaska - Order FREE Travel Brochure!
Alaska is unique among the 50 states in that most of its land mass has been organized into a system of organized boroughs, much like counties in other states. Several areas of the state are not included in any borough because of sparse population. Boroughs generally provide a more limited number of services than cities. There are two classes. First- and second-class boroughs have three mandatory powers: education, land use planning, and tax assessment and collection. The major difference between the two classes is in how they may acquire other powers. Both classes have separately elected borough assemblies and school boards.
Incorporated cities are small units of local government, serving one community. There are two classes. First-class cities, generally urban areas, have six-member councils and a separately elected mayor. Second-class cities, generally places with fewer than 400 people, are governed by a seven-member council, one of whom serves as mayor.
There are 246 federally recognized tribal governments in Alaska and one community organized under federal law. Originally an Indian reservation, Metlakatla was organized so municipal services could effectively be provided to its residents. Use the alpha list to find boroughs, cities, and areas of Alaska.

Bristol Bay
Borough
Bristol Bay Borough is known as the
"Red Salmon Capital of the World" as well as the "Gateway to Katmai
National Park and Preserve." It is located in Southwestern Alaska at the
head of Kvichak (KWEE-jak) Bay, an arm of the larger Bristol Bay. Bristol
Bay Borough was incorporated as the state's first borough in 1962. The Borough functions as the chief governing
body for the communities of
Naknek,
South Naknek, and
King Salmon and provides a variety of important services. The borough
offices are located in Naknek. The main feature of the borough's setting
is the Naknek River and the cliffs bordering Kvichak Bay. At Naknek and
South Naknek, where the cliffs are at their highest and the river is at
its widest, the combination of the broad tidal river and the brown cliffs
with their crowning greenery, present a truly striking picture. Looking
across the river from one community to the other, the towns appear dwarfed
by the cliffs on which they are situated. Click on

Prince of Wales
The Prince of Wales is the third largest island in America.
Most of the island is
characterized by steep, forested mountains (2,000-3,000 feet high) carved
by glacial ice which left deep U-shaped valleys with streams, lakes,
saltwater straits and bays. The forest is made up of Sitka spruce and
western hemlock with some western red and yellow cedar, alder, and shore
pine.
Sitka black tailed
deer and black bear are the primary game animals, and the island supports
several packs of wolves. Moose have been spotted on Prince of Wales. While
the streams and lakes contain a variety of trout, most people fish the
salt water for the five species of salmon, or for halibut, red snapper,
and other bottom fish. Eagles are a common sight and waterfowl abound
during the nesting season. Several species spend the winter in the area
including the trumpeter swan.
The temperate climate
is influenced by the Japanese current and gives Prince of Wales Island
between 60 and 200 inches of precipitation per year. Mean temperatures
range from around 35º in January to about 58º in July. Daylight on the
longest day of the year is about 15½ hours with about 7 hours on the
shortest day of the year.

Sitka, along with having a rich history (Sitka's past
is a blend of Russian history and the Tlingit culture), is considered Alaska's
most beautiful seaside town. It is situated on Baranof Island, nestled between
forested mountains and the great Pacific Ocean, on the outer waters of Alaska's
Inside Passage. Sitka offers a combination of Native culture, Russian history,
and Alaskan wilderness which will provide a diverse and unequaled experience.
Although you may not think of the word "rainforest," Sitka lies at the heart of the largest temperate rain forest in the world, the Tongass National Forest. Here you can enjoy the outdoors on well-marked mountain trails, enjoy recreation on the water with a kayaking adventure among nearby islands, or charter a boat to nearby fishing grounds to fish for world-class salmon and halibut.
Wildlife adds to Sitka's natural beauty. Our mild climate, rich habitat and relatively low human population make Sitka one of the best places to view wildlife. Nearby waters are a popular feeding ground for humpback whales in the late fall and early spring. Summertime provides a wonderful opportunity to view tufted puffins and other sea birds at St. Lazaria National Wildlife Refuge. While out on the ocean, you may also spot sea otters, sea lions and other marine wildlife.
For additional information on Sitka and the surrounding areas contact: The Sitka Convention and Visitors Bureau, PO Box 1226, Sitka, Alaska 99835. (907)747-5940. Fax (907)747-3739. Email: scvb@sitka.org. Web Site: www.sitka.org.
