Travel Warning
The government of Cape Verde is a republic with a Prime Minister and a President. The two major religions in Cape Verde are Roman Catholic (infused with several different indigenous beliefs), and Protestant. Tourism is the nation's main growth industry, and the country remains prosperous by West African standards. Famine is certainly no longer an imminent threat, yet improvements in the lives of the average Cape Verdean remain incremental, and for those without family abroad, conditions can often remain difficult.
Currency Information
The currency in Cape Verde is the Cape Verdean escudo (CVE). When planning your
trip, you can use the following as a guide for expenses.
Currency Exchange - Get your currency needs managed in advance! Many airports, railroad stations, bus depots, and other points of entry have no currency exchange. When currency exchange is available in airports, lines can be long and rates can be "sky high". These long waits and usurious fees can be a nightmare. Order in advance from All Foreign Currency right online. It's fast, easy, and you save time and money! The can also provide you with Travelers' checks, bank drafts, and transfers. U.S. dollars are not accepted everywhere and rates can be atrocious! Current Exchange Rate: Check Today's Exchange Rate
Health Matters
The worst thing you need to be careful of in Cape Verde is yellow fever, which
is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. You should take care
and be properly immunized so you can basically rule this disease out. Symptoms
of yellow fever range from a mild fever which resolves over a few days to more
serious forms with fever which would include headache, muscle pains, abdominal
pain and vomiting. A this can progress to bleeding, shock and liver and kidney
failure, you should seek treatment as soon as possible. The liver failure causes
jaundice, or yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes. There's no
specific treatment but you should seek medical help urgently if you think you
have yellow fever.
If you need medical care while you are away, it is best to be aware that medical providers may not accept payment through your insurance company and that you will therefore to pay in full for your treatment and file a claim with your insurance company for reimbursement. Therefore you should have access to cash, either from a credit card or by wire transfer. If you need assistance contact the country's local embassy or representative. For compensation, you must be treated by licensed medical personnel and provide your insurance company with proper documentation and receipts. It is advisable to always ensure you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy which covers you for repatriation to your home country. Visit the Getting Away Health and Safety Tips for Travelers page for additional information about insurance.

Weather
The cooler ocean currents off of the coast tend to keep temperatures relatively
moderate year-round. Although the climate is mostly arid, there are some rains
from August to October. The windward sides of the mountainous islands are
subject to clouds and fog, especially in the morning hours. The summer months
can be hotter and more humid, but still moderate compared to the rest of West
Africa.

I have found that it helps to know at least a little bit of the language as I travel in other countries. You do not have to be able to be a fluent speaker, but knowing a few key words and phrases will really help. I have found that, although almost everywhere I go I can find someone who speaks English, knowing just a few words of the local language can really be a help. And, it lets others know I am at least interested in their language. Visit the Getting Away Language Learning Center where you can find out how to learn another language, or where to purchase books, dictionaries, electronic translators, software and more

Travel Warnings are issued to describe long-term, protracted conditions that make a country dangerous or unstable. A Travel Warning is also issued when the U.S. Government's ability to assist American citizens is constrained due to the closure of an embassy or consulate or because of a drawdown of its staff. The countries listed below meet those criteria. Additionally, the State Department issues Country Specific Information for every country of the world with information on such matters as the health conditions, crime, unusual currency or entry requirements, any areas of instability, and the location of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in the subject country. Check with the U.S. State Department for Travel Warnings, Consular Information Sheets & Public Announcements.

Getting To and Around Cape Verde
Flying is the only realistic option for getting to and from Cape Verde. There are infrequent sea services, but they'll probably end up costing as much as a plane ticket. There are regular flights from Lisbon and less frequent flights from other European centres. Using ground transportation should only be done with a guide.

Some Things to See and
Do in Cape Verde
Mt. Fogo
The ascent takes three to four hours, but the view from top is magnificent. The
volcano's cone remains intact, but you will want to be sure to have a good pair
of boots and a guide as the slopes are covered in slippery cinders. You should
also take along some bottled water. This is
Cape Verde's highest peak at 9382 feet. Cinder-clad Mt Fogo
rises dramatically out of the floor of an ancient crater known as Chã das
Caldeiras. There is also a nice scenic, cobbled road, where along the way you
will see some interesting hamlets with lava block houses. This road circles the
entire island. Mt. Fogo is an active volcano that last erupted in 1995. Farmers
raise coffee and wine grapes on its slopes.
